The Book of Joshua,
the Accountant

1

And it came to pass in the year nineteen hundred and seventy-four, in the days of ledger and parchment, that Alan, son of Kreitzman, lifted up his hand and established a house of counsel in the land.

2

And this house was for the keeping of records, for the balancing of accounts, and for the giving of wisdom unto merchants and laborers, that they might prosper in their dealings and stand without fault before the rulers of the land.

3

And the house grew in favor among the people, for the work of Alan was diligent, and his name was known in the gates.

4

And in the twelfth year thereafter, Kenneth, his brother, was joined unto him in the labor. And Kenneth brought strength and wisdom of his own, and the house of Kreitzman & Kreitzman was made firm, for the two were of one mind and of one blood.

5

In the passing of years the house knew many shapes; it rose and was altered according to the seasons and the needs of the people. Yet in all its changes, the foundation remained unmoved, for the work was steadfast and the name endured.

6

And behold, in the year two thousand and five, Joshua, son of Kenneth, entered into the house of his father. And though young in the craft, he bore a ready spirit to learn the ways of order, and to walk in the statutes of the ledger.

7

Yet Joshua had not from his youth studied the customs of commerce nor the laws of accounts. Therefore it was laid upon his heart to return unto the halls of learning, even while his hands labored by day and by night.

8

And Joshua took upon himself the burden of one hundred and twenty measures of study in the business arts, all while holding fast to two labors, that the needs of his house might be met.

9

And the nights were long, and the days without rest, yet he did not faint, for his eye was set upon the goal, and his heart was steadfast within him.

10

And it came to pass, in the eighth month of the year two thousand and eight, the council of the accountants granted unto Joshua the right to sit for the trial of his craft. And there were four great tests, each one as a mountain to be climbed, and many stumbled upon their slopes.

11

Yet Joshua prevailed over them all in the space of six months, and his name was written among the Certified Public Accountants of the land.

12

And Joshua labored faithfully in the house of Kreitzman & Kreitzman from the year of his joining, serving the work of his uncle Alan and his father Kenneth.

13

Through the years he learned the deep matters of counsel, of numbers, and of judgment in business, that he might be ready in due time for the stewardship of the house.

14

And in the twelfth month of the year two thousand and twenty-one, Joshua took possession of the house from Alan and from Kenneth. And the stewardship was given into his hand, even as it had passed from one generation to another.

15

And thus the work begun in the days of nineteen hundred and seventy-four was not cut off, but was established anew.

16

And the people marveled that Joshua, who once entered the house as a student, now stood as master over it, a testament to perseverance, discipline, and the keeping of accounts in righteousness.

17

And it was said in those days: Blessed is the one who labors faithfully in the work of his fathers, for he shall inherit not only their house, but their honor.

18

And Joshua saw this opportunity, and it was good.
